Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the Kids run separate from the main event? — Steps and Strides Inc (the organizers) are a nonprofit whose mission includes promoting wellness for all ages. We also want to make sure that parents/guardians have the opportunity to cheer on the little ones in their lives while still being able to participate in the 5K, 10K or Half Marathon. Since we have our packet pick up and expo on Friday evening, this provides that opportunity to allow Saturday participants to grab their items ahead of time and have a bit of fun cheering on the kids race.
Is this a closed course? – While we do our best to block off many of the cross streets, or have our volunteers assist in traffic control, it has proven challenging to block some of the main thoroughfares or guarantee that members of the community don’t try to find their way around barricades. Additionally we send postcards to homes along our course notifying them of the event and the approximate time frame they can expect participants to be in their neighborhood. We also include the time the roads will open up to the public if we have them closed.
We understand the concerns from participants and our volunteers, and safety is a high priority for us. We have been in talks with some support teams to try and implement signage alerting the broader community that a run is occurring as well as creating yard signs to serve a dual purpose of promoting and reminding the community of this recurring event.
How do I know which side to run on? - Participants are asked to run on the side of the road where the arrows are placed. This will help reduce any crossing of lanes when approaching main intersections or making turns where directed. Volunteers are asked to help remind participants of this request.
Will construction impact the course? - That is a great question. We are constantly checking in on the progress and potential road closures from any and all construction projects taking place along our course. At this time we are expected to keep the course the same as it has been but we will keep everyone posted to the best of our ability as things progress.
Where should I park? - There are 3 main parking lots that can be utilized for participants, volunteers and supporters.. Parking Lots 2 and 4 along Crosby will be available (please note there are areas near CHASE bank that are reserved for bank patrons only). Across the street at MSTC will have parking as well. We will have sections of Crosby closed off to through traffic due to the start/finish line. There are many cross streets that will be available but blocked at where it intersects our course. A map will be provided prior to the event for reference.
How many awards are given? - We award the top 3 in each age with a locally created ceramic stein. NOTE: We do not have these steins for sale, however we will share the local creator(s) of each should you want to support them by ordering something from them directly.
When can I pick up the race packet? - Participants are encouraged to check in and pick up their packets the Friday before the event during our Expo at MSTC from 4:30-7:30pm. There will be a limited window on Saturday prior to race starts to register/check in. Please note that if you plan to pick up the morning of the event, the table will be on the grass and your shoes may get wet.
If I need help on race day, who should I look for? - You can find any of the volunteers wearing the light blue or white volunteers shirts, or look for blue/white tie-dye hats to locate a member of the organizing committee.
What should I do after I finish, or what can my friends/family do in the park while I run? - We will have food trucks, a beer & soda truck and music for all to enjoy. For participants, we will also have post race snacks just past the finish line.
